A/B Testing Tools for Shopify: Shoplift, Intelligems, and VWO

October 6, 2026 · by Admin

Every store owner has opinions about what will convert better. A new hero image. A different button color. A lower free shipping threshold. The problem is that opinions are often wrong, and changes made on instinct can quietly hurt sales.

A/B testing replaces guesswork with evidence. Since Google Optimize was shut down in 2023, Shopify merchants have moved to dedicated tools. These are the three we see most often and when to use each.

Shoplift

Shoplift is built specifically for Shopify and focuses on testing your theme and pages.

  • Test different templates, sections, and entire theme versions
  • Works with Shopify’s theme editor, so changes are built the way you already work
  • Reports results against store metrics like conversion rate and revenue per visitor

Best for: testing layouts, product page designs, homepage variations, and landing pages without a developer writing custom test code.

Intelligems

Intelligems is known for testing the numbers that affect profit directly.

  • Price testing across products
  • Shipping rate and free shipping threshold testing
  • Offer and discount testing
  • Content and theme testing
  • Reporting focused on profit and revenue per visitor, not just conversion rate

Best for: merchants who want to find the price, shipping, and offer mix that maximizes profit.

VWO

VWO is a full experimentation platform that works on any website, not just Shopify.

  • A/B, split URL, and multivariate testing
  • Visual editor plus code editor for advanced tests
  • Built-in heatmaps and recordings on some plans
  • Advanced audience targeting and segmentation

Best for: larger stores, multi-platform brands, and teams running a structured experimentation program across BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or headless builds.

The rules that make tests reliable

A tool does not guarantee good results. Bad testing habits produce false winners. Follow these rules:

1. Start with a hypothesis

Write it down: “Because session recordings show shoppers searching for shipping costs, adding shipping info under the price will increase add-to-cart rate.” A clear hypothesis tells you what to measure and what you learned, win or lose.

2. Test one variable at a time

If you change the headline, image, and button at once, you will not know which change caused the result.

3. Pick one primary metric

Conversion rate, revenue per visitor, or add-to-cart rate. Decide before the test starts.

4. Get enough traffic

Low-traffic stores need bigger changes and longer tests. Use a sample size calculator before starting. If your store cannot reach a meaningful sample in a few weeks, focus on larger changes or on research like session recordings instead.

5. Run full weeks

Shopping behavior differs between weekdays and weekends. Run tests for at least one to two full weeks, even if a winner appears early.

6. Do not stop at the first sign of a winner

Early results swing wildly. Wait until the test reaches its planned sample size.

7. Avoid testing during unusual periods

Black Friday, major launches, and big ad pushes change visitor behavior. Results from those periods may not hold afterward.

What to test first

  • Product page layout: image gallery, description placement, sticky Add to Cart
  • Free shipping threshold
  • Homepage hero: product-focused versus lifestyle
  • Collection page: grid size, quick add, filters
  • Offer framing: percentage off versus fixed amount off

A note on price testing

Price tests can be powerful, but handle them carefully. Keep prices consistent from product page to checkout, avoid showing different prices to the same person, and make sure your approach fits the consumer rules in the markets you sell to.

Test, learn, repeat

The real value of A/B testing is not a single winning test. It is building a habit of learning what your customers respond to.
