How to Use Microsoft Clarity to Find Conversion Leaks

October 2, 2026 · by Admin

Analytics tells you what happened. It rarely tells you why. You can see that 60 people reached checkout and did not buy, but you cannot see the confusing shipping field or the button that did not respond.

Microsoft Clarity fills that gap, and it costs nothing. It is one of the most underused CRO tools in eCommerce, and one of the first tools we install when we audit a store.

What Microsoft Clarity gives you

  • Session recordings: watch real visitors move through your store, including scrolls, taps, and clicks.
  • Heatmaps: click, scroll, and area heatmaps show where attention goes and where it stops.
  • Frustration signals: Clarity automatically flags rage clicks, dead clicks, excessive scrolling, and quick backs.
  • JavaScript errors: see which sessions hit script errors and what the visitor was doing at the time.
  • GA4 integration: connect Clarity to Google Analytics 4 to jump from your reports into related recordings.

How to install Clarity

  1. Create a free account at clarity.microsoft.com and add a new project for your store.
  2. Install the tracking code using one of these methods:
    • Shopify: use the official Microsoft Clarity app, or add the tag through Google Tag Manager.
    • WooCommerce/WordPress: use the official Microsoft Clarity plugin.
    • BigCommerce: add the script through Script Manager, or use Google Tag Manager.
  3. Confirm the installation in the Clarity dashboard. Data usually starts appearing within a couple of hours.
  4. Review your privacy and consent setup. Clarity masks sensitive input fields by default, and it supports consent signals. Make sure it only runs in line with the consent rules that apply to your customers.

Understanding the frustration signals

  • Rage clicks: repeated clicks on the same spot. Often a button that does not respond, a slow cart drawer, or an image shoppers expect to zoom.
  • Dead clicks: clicks on elements that do nothing. Shoppers think something is clickable when it is not, like a product badge, a swatch label, or plain text that looks like a link.
  • Excessive scrolling: visitors scrolling up and down quickly. Usually they cannot find information, such as shipping costs or sizing.
  • Quick backs: visitors who open a page and return almost immediately. A sign the page did not match what they expected.

A weekly routine to find conversion leaks

Clarity only helps if you use it consistently. This is the routine we recommend:

1. Filter recordings by intent

Do not watch random sessions. Filter for high-value moments:

  • Visitors who viewed the cart or checkout but did not complete a purchase
  • Mobile sessions on your top product pages
  • Sessions that include rage clicks or dead clicks
  • Traffic from your paid campaigns

2. Watch 20 sessions and take notes

Write down every moment of hesitation, confusion, or friction. After 20 sessions, patterns become obvious.

3. Check heatmaps on key templates

On product pages, look at scroll depth. If most visitors never reach your reviews or size guide, move that content higher. On collection pages, check whether filters are being used at all.

4. Prioritize fixes

Rank each issue by how many visitors it affects and how close it is to purchase. A broken checkout button beats a confusing footer every time.

5. Fix, then verify

After a fix goes live, watch new recordings of the same page to confirm the problem is gone.

Common leaks Clarity reveals

  • Variant selectors that are hard to tap on mobile
  • Discount code fields that send shoppers away to search for coupons
  • Shipping costs that only appear at the last step
  • Popups that block the Add to Cart button on small screens
  • Product images shoppers try to zoom or swipe, but cannot
  • Forms that throw errors without explaining what is wrong

Connect Clarity to GA4

Linking Clarity with GA4 lets you move from numbers to behavior. When GA4 shows a drop-off on a specific page, you can open Clarity and watch the sessions behind that drop-off. Use the GA4 integration in Clarity’s settings to connect the two.

Start watching, start fixing

Clarity will not fix anything on its own. But 30 minutes of focused viewing each week will show you problems no report can. It is the fastest way to stop guessing about why shoppers leave.
